The Gran Chaco area in Paraguay is the homeland of Ayoreo Indians. Tempted by the Christian missionaries with the visions of a better life and forced out of the forests by the settlers, they abandoned their natural world and replaced shamans with Bible. Mateo uses a cassette recorder from the 70s of the 20th century to record the tales and songs of his countrymen to save the memory of the tribe’s rites and myths. The film focused on a small, forgotten microcosm shows the catastrophic and irreversible effect of colonialism which ruins the indigenous community. How should we discuss colonialism today and what can we do for the traditional societies?
