A seemingly idyllic German colony sits at the foot of the Chilean Andes. Visiting tourists admire the nature and traditional German cuisine, but the place has a dark past. German preacher Paul Schäfer and his congregation moved to Chile in 1961 to help the poor, building a compound that they named Colonia Dignidad; the community quickly turned into a cult. The colony’s residents speak of 45 years of life in miserable conditions and often even slavery. How do they see these events today?
